Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
I didn’t grow up in an Irish-American household, so St. Patrick’s Day is one of those holidays I never quite got into when I was younger. I thought the day was primarily just an excuse for people to wear green and drink a lot of alcohol (Ha–I suppose this is true for some).
Over time (and through my love affair with Ireland), I’ve come to understand St. Patrick’s Day to be so much more: a religious holiday, the celebration of country and heritage, the honoring of a courageous man, and if I am honest, an excuse to consume traditional Irish food (I’m looking at you soda bread and lamb stew!).
I thought I’d celebrate by sharing some of my favorite Irish blessings with you. Here’s to St. Patrick and for his lovely holiday. I hope it finds you doing something extra special today.
May the lilt of Irish laughter
Lighten every load
May the mist of Irish magic
Shorten every road.
And may all your friends remember
All the favors you are owed.
May misfortune follow you all the days of your life
And never catch up.
May those who love us, love us
And those who don’t love us,
May God turn their hearts
And if he can’t turn their hearts,
May he turn their ankles
So we will know them by their limping!
May the winds of fortune sail you,
May you sail a gentle sea.
May it always be the other guy
Who says, “This drink’s on me.”
May you have all the happiness
And luck that life can hold
And at the end of all your rainbows
May you find a pot of gold.
May you be in
Heaven a half hour before the
Devil knows you’re dead!
May your mornings bring joy
And your evenings bring peace.
May your troubles grow less
As your blessings increase.
May the grass on the road to Hell grow long for want of us.
May you have a world of wishes at your command.
God and his angels close to hand.
Friends and family their love impart,
And Irish blessings in heart!
May your blessings outnumber
The shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.
May your troubles be less,
And your blessings be more,
And nothing but happiness
Come through your door.
May your home always be too small to hold all your friends.
Whenever there is happiness,
Hope you’ll be there too.
Wherever there are friendly smiles,
Hope they’ll smile on you.
May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks.
May your heart be as light as a song.
May each day bring you bright, happy hours
That stay with all the year long.
Bless your little Irish heart and every other Irish part.
May your neighbors respect you,
Troubles neglect you,
The angels protect you,
And Heaven accept you.
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
