Common Questions about Money in Ireland

August 29, 2017 | 4 Comments

A couple weeks ago, I received several emails and messages with questions about how to handle money in Ireland. I took advantage of a few moments of quiet while my little man was taking a nap to answer them on my Facebook page.

But since Facebook posts and videos tend to get lost after a few days, I thought I would link it up here so you could find it easily and see some of the great comments and tips from other readers.

Here’s what I cover:

  • How we typically pay for things while we are in Ireland (credit cards vs. cash).
  • Should you get euros before arriving or exchange money while you are in Ireland?
  • What’s the best way to get euros while you are in Ireland?
  • How can you avoid fees from your bank for taking money out abroad.
  • Should you have vendors in Ireland charge you in US dollars or Euros?
  • What international credit cards and debit cards do I recommend taking to Ireland.

One thing that people should be aware of is that Ireland does not honor $100 bills to be cashed in any Bank in that country. The $100 note is the most counterfeited bill in the world and Ireland stopped recognizing that bill almost 15 years ago. Any other denomination is fine just not the $100 note. I took 18 of them with me I could not cash them I ended up borrowing money on my credit card and it cost me a fortune. So beware and have fun.

What good tip! It’s awful to have to exchange US cash for euros at banks too. You have to take time out of your day and go to a bank, wait in line and then possibly get charged a higher exchange rate. So much better to use the ATM. It stinks you had that experience, but thank you for sharing so we all can benefit!!!

We already got Euros at our bank here in US…one is a $100 note. Will we be able to use it toward purchase there??

If it is a 100 euro note then you should be ok (it’s 100 US dollars that I think most people have issues with). Anticipate using it when you have a big purchase so that you aren’t giving a small business owner a large bill for something small (therefore requiring a lot of change). If you have any trouble you can always pop into a bank for smaller denominations. :-)
